Melissa, also known as Lemon Balm, is a sweet-scented, perennial bushy herb with small white or pink flowers. The flowers are very attractive to bees; hence the name 'Melissa' which is the Greek word for honeybee.
Melissa essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of the plant and has a glorious lemon scent – as if lemon has been mixed with newly mown grass and earth. It is very distinctive and unique in both its fragrance and therapeutic properties.
True, unadulterated Melissa is a precious oil that is hard to come by due to the plants very low yield. It is therefore frequently adulterated with other oils such as Lemon, Lemon Verbena and Lemongrass. Only True Melissa will produce the therapeutic properties contained within the plant; anything else will not have the same effect.
Melissa has been used therapeutically for centuries, in fact, it is one of the earliest known herbs used for medicinal purposes. It is thought that the Romans introduced it to England and it has been a feature of herb gardens ever since. The great Paracelsus called it the ‘Elixir of Life’ and historically it has been used to treat anxiety, melancholy, nervous disorders, asthma, flatulence and indigestion.
