Our Kanuka essential oil is steam distilled from the wild harvested leaves of the Kanuka tree/shrub (Kunzea ericoides originally known as Leptospermum ericoides). The bushy shrub, also known as White Tea Tree, is native to New Zealand and grows wild in the East Cape of the North Island. It is also now cultivated in Australia. Although Kanuka comes from the same plant family as Manuka, they are distinctly different species.
Kanuka is highly valued by the Maoris who have traditionally used various parts of the plant for treating pain and inflammation, digestive issues, wounds and skin diseases, and for calming the mind and promoting sleep.
The essential oil is pale yellow in colour, with a fresh, sweet, herbaceous/earthy aroma that is similar to Myrtle or Tea Tree, which also come from the Myrtaceae plant family.
Although sharing similar therapeutic properties to Manuka essential oil, Kanuka's composition is more closely related to Australian Tea Tree, making it a good alternative to Tea Tree if you’re looking for a more delicate aroma.
Kanuka oil is most commonly used for its analgesic, antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and strong anti-inflammatory properties.
