Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium) is often regarded as a cheaper alternative to Neroli essential oil. Both oils come from the bitter orange tree and share similar properties and fragrances. Petitgrain is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs whereas Neroli is derived from the orange blossom. Petitgrain oil used to be extracted from the unripe, green oranges, when they were still the size of cherries, hence the name Petitgrain or 'little grains.'
Today Petitgrain is widely used in skincare, pharmaceutical products and perfumery, and is the classic ingredient of Eau de Cologne.
