Peppermint is a perennial herb that is native to the Mediterranean. It is also widely cultivated in the UK, USA, China and Japan. Peppermint essential oil is steam distilled from the plant’s flowering tops and leaves.
The medicinal properties of Peppermint have long been recognised. It has been cultivated since ancient times in Japan and China and evidence of its use was also found in Egypt, in a tomb dating back to 1000 BC. The word Peppermint is derived from the Latin word ‘mente’ meaning ‘thought’, as it is reported that the Romans used Peppermint as a tonic for the brain.
Today, Peppermint is one of the best essential oils for treating digestive upsets and for helping to improve concentration and clarity of thought.
The different types of Peppermint can be distinguished via their menthol content. Peppermint from the UK generally contains 60-70% menthol, Chinese or Japanese Peppermint (Cornmint) contains approx 85% and Peppermint from the USA contains approx 50% menthol. Peppermint essential oil derived from Mentha piperita is considered to be superior to that of Mentha arvensis.
