Elemi essential oil comes from a large tropical tree from the Philippines. The tree is closely related to Frankincense and Myrrh and exudes a natural yellow resin. It is only when the tree sprouts leaves that the resin is produced. The resin solidifies on contact with the air and is then distilled to produce an exotic, beautiful essential oil.
Elemi is often referred to as 'poor man's Frankincense' as it has similar properties. It has a long history of use for respiratory complaints and for skincare. It is also believed to stimulate the immune system, thus being a key ingredient in many 'preventative' blends.
Like most oils made from resins, Elemi has wonderful skin-healing properties. Elemi essential oil can be used for reducing scar tissue, and supporting healthy tissue regrowth (try combining it with Frankincense for additional skin-healing properties). Its use for treating wounds and skin infections dates back to the 16th century and it is reported that Elemi was included in the aromatic blend that the Egyptians used for embalming.
