Damiana essential oil comes from an aromatic flowering shrub native to southern Texas, Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The shrub has a strong spicy aroma, a little similar to chamomile. It produces fragrant, bright yellow flowers in early to late summer, followed by fruits that taste a little like figs. The essential oil is steam distilled from the flowers and leaves and has a rich, warm, sweet, herbaceous aroma with a slight bitter undertone.
The Mayan people traditionally used damiana leaves and stems in a medicinal tea. It was well known for its aphrodisiac powers and its relaxing and sedating properties, and was also used in a 19th century patent medicine called Pemberton’s French Wine Coco (an early version of Coca Cola). This medicinal beverage contained cocaine, wine, damiana and kola nuts and was marketed as an ‘invigorator of the sexual organs’ and a cure for many other things such nerve trouble, headaches and digestive problems.
Damiana is still used today in herbal medicine. It is also used in a traditional Mexican liqueur that can be added to margaritas in place of triple sec. Mexican folklore claims that damiana was actually used in the very first margaritas.
Damiana essential oil is thought to have a balancing effect on the Sacral chakra which is associated with the emotional body, sensuality, and creativity. It is most well known as a nerve relaxant, mood enhancer, hormone balancer, digestive stimulant and general tonic. As its traditional usage suggests, it is also thought to have powerful effect on a person’s sexual energy.
