Cumin is a small annual herb that originated from the Mediterranean area. The plant has deep green, narrow feathery leaves and tiny white or pink flowers, followed by small oblong seeds. Cumin essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the ripe seed.
Known since Biblical times, the Egyptians used Cumin mainly for its digestive properties and for headaches. In modern aromatherapy Cumin is considered a warming essential oil that can help improve the digestive system and relieve muscular pains. Cumin essential oil is also a good tonic, having beneficial effects on headaches, migraine pain and nervous exhaustion.
