Our microfoliant Bamboo powder can be used on the face and body. It is ideal for use in exfoliating face masks, face washes, shower gels, body scrubs and polishes. Suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin.

Bamboo stem powder is a solidified organic silica derived from female bamboo trees (Bambusa arundinacea). It is produced from a white liquid, called Tabasheer or Vanshlocan, which exudes from the nodal joints of the tree and solidifies into a crystalline powder. This powder is rich in silica and mineral salts and is used therapeutically in traditional Ayurvedic, Unani and Chinese medicine. It also makes an excellent skin exfoliant.

Viewed as the crème de la crème of exfoliators, this super-fine, 100% natural Bamboo powder offers extremely gentle yet highly effective exfoliation, resulting in softer, smoother, healthier and more radiant skin.

How to use

Bamboo powder can be mixed into gels, creams, lotions, soaps, oils or butters etc to produce a variety of exfoliating products. We recommend using it at 1-5% for facial application and up to 10% for body. You can adjust the amount of powder according to your skin sensitivity. Add the powder once you have made up your product (or add to one of our ready-to use cosmetic bases) and stir thoroughly. If you’re using warm, melted ingredients ensure that the product is below 40°C before adding the powder.

In order to keep the bamboo particles suspended in your product you may need to add a cosmetic thickener such as Xanthan Gum. This is ideal for use in shower gels, face washes, creams and lotions and is typically used at 0.1 – 0.5%.

Bambusa arundinacea

Detoxifying / Energising Exfoliating Shower Gel*

Mix 100ml SLS Free Bath & Shower Gel, 2 tsp Bamboo exfoliant, 10 drops Grapefruit essential oil, 7 drops Rosemary, 4 drops Fennel and 3 drops Juniperberry.

Detox Body Scrub

Mix 3 tbsp Kaolin Clay, 1 tbsp Green Clay, 1 tbsp fine ground oatmeal, 2 tbsp Bamboo powder, 3-4 tbsp Orange Flower Hydrolat, 4 drops Lavender, 3 drops Geranium, 2 drops Juniperberry and 1 drop Lemon.

Exfoliating Face Wash for Problem Skin*

Mix 100ml of SLS Free Bath & Shower Gel (suitable for use on the face and body), 1 tsp of Bamboo, 2.5ml of Aloe Vera & Seaweed Gel, 0.5ml of Vitamin E oil, 6 drops Tea Tree essential oil, 2 drops Lavender and 2 drops Ravensara.

*Adding a thickener such as Xanthan Gum (at 0.1 - 0.5%) will help to keep the particles suspended evenly throughout the product.

Exfoliating Clay Face Mask

Combine 2 tsp of either French Green Clay or Kaolin Clay, ¼ tsp Bamboo powder, up to 3 drops of your chosen essential oil, and enough hydrolat or Aloe Vera Gel to make a thick paste (usually 2-3 tsp). If your skin is dry you can also add a couple of drops of carrier oil e.g. Apricot Kernel, Jojoba or Rosehip. Massage gently into the face and leave on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off. Use once or twice per week.

For normal/oily skin try French Green Clay, Aloe Vera & Seaweed Gel or Orange Flower Hydrolat with Geranium, Lavender or Neroli essential oil.

For dry/mature/sensitive skin try Kaolin Clay, Aloe Vera & Rose Gel or Rose Otto Hydrolat with Neroli or Rose essential oil

Patch test first on sensitive skin. This mask is best made fresh. Discard any remaining product after use.

Exfoliating Shea Butter Massage Bars

You will need 50ml Shea Butter, 25ml Coconut Oil, ½ tbsp Bamboo Exfoliating Powder, 45 drops of essential oil (we used a detoxifying blend of 15 drops Juniperberry, 15 Lemon and 15 Rosemary).

Gently melt the Shea Butter in the microwave or over a pan of boiling water. Allow to cool slightly then add in the other ingredients and stir thoroughly. Pour into a chocolate mould and leave to set in the fridge. Also best stored in the fridge.

To use, massage into clean skin, using a circular motion. The butter will melt on contact with warm skin. Rinse off the Bamboo particles and pat dry. The bars should leave your skin beautifully soft, fragrant and moisturised.
