Our 100% natural and 98.79% Organic Liquid Castile soap is made from saponified coconut and sunflower seed oils. This traditional soap formulation dates back to the 12th century where it was first produced from olive oil in the Spanish city of Castile!
This vegetable-based, biodegradable soap is now a firm favourite with environmentally conscious consumers who are looking to reduce the chemicals in their life.
Castile soap can be used in place of wide range of personal care and household cleaning products. It has a mild pH and gentle action that makes it perfect for making natural hand, face and body washes, bubble bath and shampoo. It can also be used for a wide variety of home cleaning tasks such as washing the dishes and laundry, and cleaning sinks, baths, toilets, floors and windows. It can even be used for washing the dog and making natural bug sprays for plants.
Our Liquid Castile soap is fragrance free and is ideal for blending with essential oils and other oil-based or water-based herbal ingredients to create your own tailor-made blends. It is suitable for vegans and can be used on all skin types including dry and sensitive.
Notes:
- There are some essential oils that do not mix in perfectly with this natural soap base. These may include Clove, Eucalyptus, Lemon and Lemongrass.
- Other oils such as Sweet Orange may rise to the top if too much is used. If this happens you can warm the mixture gently and stir back in. Leave the mixture for 24 hours to check for further separation. If it still separates you can skim off the excess oil.
- Lavender essential oil has a 'thickening' effect on the soap base.
See our recipe tab for more information on how it can be used.
Liquid Castile soap is the ultimate body and home cleanser. Here are just a few ideas on how it can be used.
Antibacterial/Moisturising Foaming Hand Wash
Blend 30ml of Castile Soap, 10ml of fractionated Coconut Oil, 8 drops of Lavender essential oil and 6 drops each of Lemon and Ravensara and mix in 120ml of distilled water. Pour into a ‘foaming’ soap dispenser and shake well to combine. The soap will have a watery consistency but should bubble up nicely with the foaming mechanism. Please note that the oils will separate from the water so you will need to give the bottle a quick shake prior to each use.
If you don't have a foamer you can simply mix the soap and oils and omit the water.
Energising Body Wash
Mix 100ml of Castile Soap, 50ml of fractionated Coconut oil (or any carrier oil of your choice), 50ml of raw honey, 5ml Vitamin E oil, 20 drops of Bergamot essential oil, 20 drops Lavender, 12 drops Rosemary, 12 drops Lime and 4 drops Ginger. Stir gently to combine and pour into a pump dispenser bottle.
Antibacterial All-Purpose Surface Cleaner
In a spray bottle mix 250ml of distilled water, 15-30ml of Castile Soap (depending on how soapy you want the mixture), 25 drops of Tea Tree essential oil and 12 drops each of Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Lemon. Gently shake the bottle to combine and shake well before each use. Spray onto surfaces and wipe off with a damp cloth. Spot test first in an inconspicuous area and do not use on polished surfaces. As this surface cleaner does not contain a preservative you should make up a fresh batch every couple of weeks. Store away from heat or direct sunlight to preserve the therapeutic properties of the essential oils.
Stubborn Stain Scrub / Toilet Cleaner
For dirtier surfaces and stubborn stains sprinkle on baking soda then dampen with the above spray to make a paste. Use an eco-friendly scourer to scrub off dirt, grease and grime. As above, spot test before widespread application and do not use on polished surfaces.
This combination can also be used for cleaning toilets. Apply the baking soda and antibacterial spray and scrub with a toilet brush. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes before giving a final scrub and flushing clean.
Bathroom Scouring Paste
Mix 235g Baking Soda, 3 tbsp of Castile Soap, 1 tsp white vinegar, 20 drops of Lemon essential oil and 20 drops of Pine until you have a thick paste. You can add more Castile Soap if you wish to thin it down but do not add more vinegar. The paste can be kept in airtight jar to be used as required. If it becomes too hard, add a little more soap to loosen it up.
Floor Cleaner
Mix 4.5L of very hot water, 40ml of Castile Soap and 10 drops each of Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Pine essential oils. Spot test on a small area of flooring before widespread application. Do not use on polished surfaces.
Garden Plant Spray for Aphids & Powdery Mildew
Mix 5ml Castile Soap and 10ml Neem Oil and add to a 750ml spray bottle. Top up with water and shake well to combine the ingredients. Apply once a week to treat infestations and once every two weeks as a preventative measure. Make up a fresh batch for each application.
