Our Tamanu Seed (Calophyllum inophyllum) oil comes from the tamanu tree. The large evergreen tree is native to Asia and Australia and goes by many different names, including Indian laurel, oil-nut, mastwood, beach calophyllum and beautyleaf.
The oil is cold pressed from the ripe fruits of the tree which are sundried for 1 to 2 months to allow the oil biosynthesis and accumulation in the nut. It is yellow to green in colour and has a strong earthy, herby, nutty aroma.
Tamanu oil has been used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes for centuries and is highly valued for its wound healing properties, thanks to its antimicrobial (antibacterial, antifungal) and anti-inflammatory effects. It is especially recommended for skin conditions such as burns, scars, infections, dermatoses, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne, chilblains, dry or cracked skin, nappy rash, diabetic sores and haemorrhoids. It is also thought to have calming, analgesic properties that make it beneficial in massage for conditions such as neuralgia, rheumatism, arthritis, and sciatica.
The oil is rich in skin nurturing essential fatty acids and antioxidant, UV-absorbing compounds that make it a popular ingredient in skincare products. It is thought to fight free radical damage, boost collagen production, aid skin cell regeneration, reduce scarring, and restore the skin’s barrier function. It is commonly used in anti-ageing, after sun and other skin-soothing products and is also thought to be helpful in the prevention of stretch marks.
Tamanu Seed oil’s nourishing properties are also useful for haircare to hydrate, condition and encourage stronger, healthier hair growth. It can also help to soothe the scalp when dry or inflamed, or if a fungal infection is present.
The oil is suitable for all skin types but should be spot tested first on sensitive skin.
HOW TO USE:
Tamanu oil can be used undiluted but if you are using for the first time, or using on sensitive skin, or on large areas then it may be beneficial to dilute with another carrier oil such as Grapeseed, Sweet Almond, Coconut or Jojoba. We advise adding a few drops to 15ml of another suitable carrier oil. For targeted application to small areas or to blemishes the oil can be applied undiluted.
The oil has quite a strong aroma thanks to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds within the oil. This will however wear off once applied to the skin.
SAFETY:
Tamanu is classed as a nut tree so should be avoided with nut allergies. Do not take internally.
